Pancake Making

Before we mark the start of solemn season of Lent in the Church's calendar with Ash Wednesday, we open the doors of St Margaret's Church in Ditchling for the traditional activity of pancake making.

The tradition of making pancakes on Shrove Tuesday comes from families using up all the ingredients in their cupboards so that they could start Lent, the season of abstinence, the following day.

Eggs, flour and milk were very common things to be given up and they were often converted into pancakes. We continue that tradition by inviting all in our community to enjoy pancakes in the Church. along with other refreshments and good things to eat. We particularly welcome children and encourage them to join in and make the Church messy by tossing pancakes high in the air!

A small entry fee is charged in advance or on the door to cover the cost of the nourishment and to raise a little money for the Church. Look on our website for details of the 2025 event!
